Enclosure No. 2.

34

Hon. Director of Public Works,

Experimental Waste Detection Work.

Further to my minutes dated 11.5.37 and 28.5.37,

I attach a further report prepared by Mr. Forbes, detailing

the work done during the past few months.

A saving of 55,000 gallons per day has been effected at a cost of approx. $2,300, which works out at

about $42,000 per million gallons, exclusive of capital

outlay on meters and equipment.

This compares unfavourably with the estimated annual operating expenditure of $40,000 shewn on the attached

statement, but the work so far carried out represents probably the most expensive type of waste detection work and includes renewal of a large number of stopcocks.

Future maintenance of the districts already

dealt with would cost a great deal less, if systematic surveys

are carried out.

I am afraid that unless the current maintenance

votes can be supplemented, it will not be possible to incur much further expenditure on waste detection work this year.
